A week of Christmas festivities – Gold Coast style

Dominica Czaczka | December 2018

As 2018 wraps up and the festive season fast approaches, why not join in on the Christmas spirit and embrace all things silly season – Gold Coast style!

On the first day of Christmas, our Gold Coast gave to us; spectacular, sparkling Christmas light displays to fill our hearts with glee.

Prepare for sensory overload – Gold Coasters are a festive bunch and we take great pride in our Christmas light displays. As soon as the calendar ticks over to December you’ll notice twinkling lights transforming the Gold Coast into a Christmas wonderland. Back for its 26th year, the City of Gold Coast Christmas Lights Competition provides an ideal blueprint to map out your hunt for the perfect display. Wander the streets of your neighbourhood or check out this year’s entrants here.

On the second day of Christmas, our Gold Coast gave to us; extravagant decorations sprinkled across the city.

If you’re out and about town, make sure to keep an eye out for all the jolly decorations springing up across the city. From a 10 metre tree with LED lighting on Bundall Road, a giant Santa, garlands to Christmas trees of every shape and size, the Gold Coast has decked itself out to welcome in the festive period. The Christmas decorations will be going up in the coming weeks across the city, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled!

On the third day of Christmas, our Gold Coast gave to us; sunny skies and balmy weather to enjoy our pristine beaches.

While thousands of tourists flock to our shores come Christmas time to lap up our beautiful beaches, Gold Coasters are lucky enough to enjoy them all year round. Take a staycation and appreciate the gift Mother Nature has bestowed upon us. Beat the crowds (and blazing sunshine) with an early morning swim or slip slop slap and take the SUP out for a paddle. Just remember to swim between the red and yellow flags!

On the fourth day of Christmas, our Gold Coast gave to us; a smattering of local markets to take the stress out of Christmas shopping

Take a stroll amongst the twinkling lights and shop up a storm this festive season at one of the many local markets sprinkled across the Gold Coast. With more local produce and trinkets that you can poke a candy cane at, you’ll be bound to fill your stockings with yuletide treats in no time.

Check out a few of our top picks here:

Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets

Christmas Twilight Markets in Coomera

On the fifth day of Christmas, our Gold Coast gave to us; a taste of winter wonderland bliss.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! While the weather down on the Gold Coast is hardly frightful, it’s far from a frosty winter wonderland that our neighbours in the Northern Hemisphere experience. Swap thongs for ice-skating boots and cool down with some laps around your local ice rink.

On the sixth day of Christmas, our Gold Coast gave to us; carolling events far and near to sing our hearts out.

It’s time to warm up your vocals and belt out your favourite tunes – carolling season is upon us. From community events to Christmas extravaganzas on the beach, carol events of all shapes and sizes are springing up on the Gold Coast. We recommend checking out the Mayor’s Christmas Carols (they are regarded as the premiere event of the season for a reason!), but if you’re unable to make it you can find a local event near you.

On the seventh day of Christmas, our Gold Coast gave to us; a chance to brighten a child’s Christmas

Christmas is a time for giving, especially to those in need. Brighten a child’s Christmas and take the time this holiday season to donate to the 2018 Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. Beneficiaries for this year’s appeal are charities Paradise Kids and Friends With Dignity. Wrapped gifts with identifying age and gender are welcome at the following City of Gold Coast centres by Wednesday 19 December:

• Council Chambers, Surfers Paradise, 135 Bundall Road
• Council Chambers, Southport, 47 Nerang Street
• Bundall Customer Service Centre, 8 Karp Court
• Palm Beach Customer Service Centre, 26 Eleventh Avenue
• Upper Coomera Customer Service Centre, 90 Reserve Road
• Runaway Bay branch library, Lae Drive
• Elanora branch library, The Pines Shopping Centre.
