With 300 days of sunshine a year, an enviable natural environment and a love of the outdoors, one might argue a healthy lifestyle goes hand in hand with living on the Gold Coast.

Embracing a healthier lifestyle doesn’t have to break the bank – we’ve found 5 ways you can stay active on the Gold Coast for free!

1. Outdoor gym

Gym memberships can get pricey, so why not use one of the Gold Coast’s open air outdoor gyms?

If you’ve ever strolled along the oceanway paths in our coastal suburbs, you’ve probably noticed clusters of exercise equipment sprinkled throughout our parks. From ellipticals to cardio steppers, to bars and plyometrics, you can tailor your own workout to suit your fitness level.

While there are various parks on the coast, our hot tip is to check out the Varsity Lakes outdoor gym at Varsity Central Park. Home to 17 workout stations, the park caters to all fitness levels and is the perfect spot the next time you want to pump some iron.

Bonus: the park is fully lit and covered, meaning you can work out rain, hail or shine!

2. Hit the stairs

Burn baby burn! Ready to set your quads on fire? Grab a friend and make your way to the famed Currumbin stairs on Pacific Parade. The stairs are located in Wallace Nicoll Park opposite Currumbin Alley. Here you’ll find local HIIT enthusiasts pounding their way up roughly 130 steps. You’ll be soaked in sweat in no time – however the view at the top is worth the climb!

3. Try a fitness class

Group fitness can be an excellent way to stay motivated with a health regime; the hard work of planning a workout is already done for you – just turn up and go!

The City of Gold Coast’s Active & Healthy program offers a timetable of free and low-cost classes to encourage the wider community to embrace active living. From yummy mummy bootcamps, saluting the sun with yoga, Tai Chi to having a splash at aqua classes, you’re bound to find something suitable. With new classes constantly being added to the timetable, the Active & Healthy program can be a great way to try a new fitness craze at an affordable price point.

4. Take the bike for a spin

With more than 1000 kilometres of bikeways connecting the city, exploring the Gold Coast on wheels is a great way to stay fit and avoid traffic. Whether you prefer the coastal route or perhaps something a little more challenging, you can find inspiration to plan your next cycle here.

Pro tip: make a pit stop at one of the coast’s many cafes and enjoy your caffeine fix as a little treat.

5. Parkrun

Love hitting the pavement but wish you had some company? Jump on the parkrun wagon and join other avid runners at 7am every Saturday morning on a timed 5km run at parkrun locations across the city. Parkrun is an inclusive event, with everyone from beginners to budding Olympic athletes welcomed to take part. It’s free to join in – just make sure to register before your first run online.
