Gold Coast artist to feature in House Rules: High Stakes

Gold Coast artist Llewellyn Skye is set to have her work showcased to a national audience in the newest season of House Rules airing on Channel 7 this week.

The renovation reality show, now in its eighth season, has partnered with Gold Coast-based online gallery Art Lovers Australia for the first time – bringing homegrown Australian artists into the picture with a focus on original work that is selected as the centrepiece of each renovation. In 2019, the online gallery also forged a supplier deal with the hit television show The Block, propelling numerous Gold Coast artists into the national spotlight.

Skye’s work has been shown in more than 50 local and international exhibitions and can now add national television show to her credentials thanks to House Rules.

“Nancy (owner) from Art Lovers Australia called me and said my work had been selected. It was totally out of the blue, it was crazy,” says Skye.

Following the great news, Skye sent off the artwork to be scanned by a printing company in Southport.

“I’ve got the original, and the show has the stretched print,” she says. “Both copies will be available to purchase through the Art Lovers Australia website.”

This season, contestants will fight for their position in the competition by renovating the penthouse of the iconic Focus Apartments in Surfers Paradise. Skye’s artwork We are the Coast will be featured by contestants Tamara and Rhys.

Despite the recognition and celebration of appearing on television, the mother of three from Palm Beach admits the road ahead isn’t easy amidst the Covid-19 crisis.

“I know a lot of artists will be struggling over the next few months, as sales will be low and exhibitions will be cancelled. My next solo show is in August down in Melbourne and not sure if it will go ahead.”

Skye says it’s important we support local artists during these uncertain times.

“It’s so important – the artistic community. We tell stories through our art, about what’s happening. So it will be interesting to see all the art comes out afterwards.”

Catch the season eight premiere of House Rules: High Stakes at 7pm on the Seven Network.
