Entrepreneur Dr Tanya Unni has carved out an impressive career in the health industry since moving to the Gold Coast from the UK almost a decade ago.
In the years since, entrepreneur Dr Unni and her husband Dr Ameer Hamza have built one of the largest medical groups in South East Queensland, Amtan Medical. They currently have eight medical centres located in the northern part of the coast, with another set to open in March 2019. Adding to their portfolio is specialist centres and a skin laser and cosmetic clinic.
Their business achievements were nationally recognised late last year when they were named in Australia’s Top 100 Young Entrepreneurs list. Dr Unni and Dr Hamza took out the number 18 spot.
“It was so encouraging; it was so good because it felt like what we are doing is right,” said Unni of the award.
In 2010, when the couple had moved to the Sunshine State, following a friend’s holiday recommendation, Dr Unni explained that they had no plan, but had quickly fallen in love with the city and its entrepreneurial spirit.
“As we started exploring, we realised this place had immense potential and there’d been a lot of things we could do and a lot of ways we could contribute; like the community and then that could be rewarding as well.”
Within the first three months of unpacking their bags, the pair took over their first medical centre in Main Beach. It had been an exciting and challenging experience for the trained GP’s who first met in India at medical school. Dr Unni explained that setting up the business on the Gold Coast was much easier than they expected, especially compared to England.
“People are encouraging and welcome new businesses. The government supports start-ups, they are really for it…creating more jobs, more community engagement, which is what we are about.”

From here, the sky has been the limit for the power couple. In recent months they’ve found great success in the skin-care market with their invention of a skin-exfoliation device, the NuSonic. In addition, Dr Unni will soon be releasing a new skin range titled Dermiracle in time for Mother’s Day with all profits going directly to a local charity, yet to be announced.
With such a busy schedule, Unni explained how important it was to step back from it all and spend time with family. The couple – who reside in Hope Island – have raised two young children on the Gold Coast. In their downtime they enjoy going to the beach and heading to the cinema at the newly developed Westfield Coomera.
