Certainty and confidence: a legacy for the future

David Russell | September 2020

A civil engineer by trade, Mayor Tom Tate took a leap into the tourism and hospitality industry in his formative years, quickly carving out a name for himself within the business community.

An accomplished businessman, Mayor Tate previously served as CEO of his family-owned business, commanding a portfolio of well-known resorts and hotels. He has served as a director and chairman of numerous organisations, including Gold Coast Rugby, Gold Coast Turf Club and Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland.

Drawing on his strong business acumen, Mayor Tate has spent his time in office ensuring everyone knows that the Gold Coast is ‘open for business’. This has seen certainty return to the city, which in turn has boosted confidence and created significant investment and opportunities across the Gold Coast.

But there was one quality constituents wanted from the Mayor of Gold Coast – to be genuine.

In his transition from a respected businessman to a bold civic leader, Mayor Tate was determined to retain his authentic approach to leadership.

“People don’t always agree with me but they know what I say comes from the heart.”

As the Gold Coast continues its trajectory as one of the fastest growing cities in Australia, Mayor Tate acknowledges managing growth will be a vital component to retaining the city’s liveability.

“It’s finding a balance between being a regional city and a major player on the global stage,” he said.

Regardless of the challenges that lie ahead, charting a steady course for the Gold Coast remains Mayor Tate’s priority.

“You serve the people of the city you love. That’s the highest honour you can have.”
