The Gold Coast has welcomed back Australia’s biggest television stars for the 61st TV WEEK Logie Awards.
The prestigious event returned to the coast for a second time on Sunday 30 June, bolstering the city’s reputation as a major events city with an emerging arts and culture scene.
The country’s most celebrated awards ceremony once again took place at The Star Gold Coast. Hot topics on the red carpet included the city’s warm weather, trendy café scene, world-class film and TV production facilities and more.

“We probably visit the Gold Coast more than most other places in Australia, because we always get a great response and reaction here. It’s light earlier here, it’s warmer here, as a TV weather man I’m all over that and it’s fun!” said Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac.
MasterChef Australia judge Gary Mehigan praised the quality of restaurants on offer.
“We were filming up on the coast here, and we ate at the Pavilion (Burleigh), The Fish House, and Rick Shores – we ate the little Moreton Bay bug rolls and that was just in two days!
“I think once upon a time you used to come up here and everyone would make these Melbourne comparisons, about Melbourne style, you know coffee and cafes and café culture, and now nobody even goes there! It’s a very unique feeling,” expressed Mehigan.
Meanwhile acting legend Sam Neill – who’s worked with the biggest names in Hollywood including Director Steven Spielberg on Jurassic Park – said the studios at Village Roadshow can rival those around the globe.
“These studios are really world standard,” he said.
As South East Queensland residents, 9 News presenters Andrew Lofthouse and Melissa Downes agreed that there is so much more to the Gold Coast than the sun, surf and sand!
“The Gold Coast is more than the beaches and the high-rises, there’s a whole other world in the hinterland,” said Lofthouse.
“Some of the best views from this hotel are actually looking up to the hinterland – it’s gorgeous, and the canals,” continued Downes.
And Doctor Doctor’s Rodger Corser hinted that the Gold Coast could be his next home.
“I think the food and wine scene is really emerging and amazing. A lot of our friends have moved up here from Sydney, who have started businesses…and you may get us up here as well!”
In the days leading up to the awards night ceremony, the city also played host to a number of invite-only industry events and a dedicated free event solely to the fans! On Friday 28 June the public had the opportunity to mingle with some of their favourite stars at Kurrawa Park in Broadbeach. Logie favourites Costa Georgiadis, Eve Morey and Ryan Moloney attended, plus ARIA Award-winner singer Conrad Sewell serenaded the crowd with a live performance.
