How to spoil your mum this Mother’s Day

Dominica Czaczka | May 2019

Mother’s Day may be synonymous with pyjamas and high tea, but that doesn’t mean you can’t break the status quo and spend some quality time with mum in a way she’ll appreciate.

But first, breakfast!

There are only few things certain in life – life, death, taxes and a lengthy line-up at your local café on Mother’s Day.

Skip the queues and amp up your home-cooked breakfast with a BBQ brunch by the beach. Luckily for us Gold Coasters many of our parks are well equipped for the occasion, sporting easy to use barbeques and ample seating.

Our top picks include:

  • Harley Park, Labrador
  • Mick Schamburg Park, Miami
  • Kurrawa Pratten Park, Broadbeach
  • Pat Fagan Park, Coolangatta
  • Justins Park, Burleigh Heads

Stop and smell the flowers

Once mum’s tum has been satisfied with a cook-up of epic proportions, take her for a stroll through the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens in Benowa. Boasting 31 hectares of green space, this oasis offers plenty to do and see for all ages. Laze around the lagoon, stop and smell the roses, visit the native butterfly garden or check out the Kaialgumm Games Trail.

The Botanic Gardens also provide an off-leash dog area, which means you can bring Fido along (he’s part of the family after all).

Off to market

Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a selection of freshly baked goods, soy candles and other gourmet delicacies. Treat mum to a culinary sensation enjoy a morning out with the family at the Bundall Farmers Markets at HOTA. Grab a cold-pressed juice as you wander the stalls or stock up the pantry with handmade jams, fresh fruit and artisan cheeses.

Don’t forget to check out the cultural precinct while you’re there – the free Dean Cogle: Beyond Nostalgia exhibition is on display in the HOTA Foyer Gallery from 11 May to 30 June 2019.

Alpaca lunch

If you’re looking to surprise mum with a quirky experience, look no further than an alpaca experience at Mountview Alpaca Farm. While this one isn’t technically on the Gold Coast (we love you regardless Scenic Rim), it does give you the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with a herd of alpacas. Purchase a bag of feed for $3 or splash out for some quality time with one of the packages available. The farm is located within O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards, so you can coordinate your alpaca time with a vineyard picnic basket, breakfast hamper or a bottle of wine and make a day of it.

Surf’s up

Was mum a grom in her youth? Whisk her away to Burleigh Hill this weekend for the Gold Coast Open for a day of surf, sun and fun. Get the whole family involved with a free family yoga session, kick back on the hill with live tunes and keep the kids entertained with half pipe skate demos. Don’t forget to hang around to see who gets crowned as the Gold Coast Open champion!

Corks and canvas

Release mum’s inner Picasso as you sip and paint to your heart’s content at the Brush and Barrel art studio in Surfers Paradise. The concept is simple – pop a bottle of your favourite bubbles (best part, it’s BYO) as you settle in for a step-by-step painting experience. With a glass of wine in one hand and a paintbrush in the other, this takes quality mother-daughter time to the next level.
