Pizzey Park Gold Coast

A thriving hub for sports lovers and outdoor enthusiasts

Katherine Maloney | November 2019

Head down to Pizzey Park in Miami any weekend and you’ll find thousands of Gold Coasters enjoying the sports and recreation facilities on offer.

Having evolved over time to become the city’s largest and most popular sporting and active lifestyle precinct, it’s now home to over 25 sports clubs, a large aquatic centre and South East Queensland’s largest tennis facility.

With constant population growth and increased participation in sport, it’s fundamental that Pizzey Park can meet future demand, so City of Gold Coast has engaged leading Gold Coast based design firm, Place Design Group to prepare a draft Master Plan with a vision of creating a premier sport, active recreation and lifestyle precinct.

The draft plan, which was developed in close consultation with the community, outlines staged park upgrades over the next 15 years.

Design Principal, Clint Wood from Place Design Group said the Master Plan was designed to create a fresh new identity for the Pizzey Park Precinct that inspires, motivates and engages residents to participate in recreation and sport.

“With this in mind it’s important that Pizzey Park evolves with society trends, including catering for the rise of women’s sport and the fact that people are looking for unstructured sporting and physical activity opportunities to fit into their busy lifestyles. Being inclusive of these changes will ensure that all residents receive the health and social benefits that participation in an active lifestyle delivers.

“The master plan aims to deliver infrastructure solutions that respond to community needs, improve accessibility and inspire activity,” Clint said.

Based on feedback from stakeholders, residents and sporting organisations, key design features of the master plan are:

• improved traffic flow and parking options with safer access into the precinct for all users
• accessible pathways and connections linking all areas of the precinct
• creation of a green recreational spine running through the centre of the precinct
• central hub and celebration lawn to create a sense of place and identity
• development of integrated sport and recreation facilities that maximise opportunities for collaboration and sports participation
• activation of parklands through regular activities and events to increase the physical activity and wellbeing of community members
• holistic management of the precinct to improve functionality and accessibility for all
• communication of the precinct’s identity citywide and creation of a signage scheme
• incorporate environmental design principles

City of Gold Coast is asking community members to share their thoughts on the draft Master Plan and go in the draw to win a $250 Eftpos gift card. Complete the survey here. Consultation runs 27 November 2019 – 17 December 2019.
