The Gold Coast guide to gifting local

Dominica Czaczka | December 2019

The tree is up; the Christmas lights are sparkling and carols are filtering through the radio airwaves – December is well and truly underway.

With Christmas only days away, the days to finalise your presents are slowly running out. If you’re eager to avoid the mad rush of the major shopping centres and want to support local business, why not fill your Santa sack this year with some of the below goodies?

The Wave Chaser

Buying for someone who rises early for a quick paddle before work? Help them chase their next big wave and gift them something special from a local surf shop:

Board Culture

Priding themselves on their old-school vibe, Board Culture Community Surf Store is one of the oldest independent surf shops in Queensland. Built on the foundations of the legendary Town & Country Surf shop in 1984, the store today remains entwined with core surfing values and has a reputation for supporting their local community. With a built-in Espresso Bar, you can come in for your caffeine fix whilst browsing a selection of boards and surf wear.

Based in Burleigh, online retailer Boardcave stocks a huge range of Gold Coast board shapers for every style of surfing. At Boardcave you’ll find boards from shapers like famed Darren Handley from DHD Surfboards, shaper to the stars Jason Stevenson from JS Industries, the game-changing designs from DMS Surfboards or leading Gold Coast shaper Jason Rodd from JR Surfboards. Spoilt for choice, you’ll be sure to find a customisable board for that special surfer in your life.

Stuart Surf Designs

Based at a local factory in Mermaid Beach, Stuart Surf Designs focuses on the craft of high quality surfboards at factory direct pricing. With a workshop only metres from the shopfront, you’ll be able to spot Stuart himself pumping out designs from start to finish during the week. Stuart Surf Designs works closely with locals, clubs and surf schools to keep the surfing spirit and lifestyle alive on the Gold Coast.

The Snoozer

Say goodbye to daggy pyjamas and say hello to luxe loungewear. Think feminine florals, delicate lace and silky textiles – Homebodii is the embodiment of elegant sleepwear and undergarments. Gold Coast based founder Ingrid Bonnor established the brand in 2012 before shortly making waves in the bridal loungewear market. Homebodii is now stocked in a number of high profile retailers, including David Jones, The Iconic, Revolve Clothing, Anthropologie and Nordstrom.

The Adrenalin Junkie

What better way to get the blood pumping than with unlimited entry to one of our theme parks? Scream your lungs out on Dreamworld’s Giant drop, feel your stomach squirm on Movie World’s DC Rivals HyperCoaster or slip and slide at one of the water parks – pick your poison.

The Sun Worshipper

Got a beach bum in your family? With a scorching summer ahead, these picks will make for long days spent by the sea.

Moana Bikini

The brainchild of Gold Coast designer Karina Irby, this swimwear label is one that packs a punch – all with a focus on encouraging women to feel comfortable, confident and carefree in their own skin. Karina Irby is a firm advocate of body positivity and acceptance, frequently sharing images of cellulite and eczema with her followers to amplify her messages.

Leave the sand at the beach this summer and say g’day to Sandusa, the sand resistant and waterproof beach towel designed to prevent sand from finding its way into your car or home. Designed by Gold Coast local Baz Brown, Sandusa was launched with a crowdfunding campaign in 2014 and have since sold over 30,000 towels in 30 different countries.

The Foodie

Little Cocoa

If you know someone that’s always keen for dessert first, then spoil them with a Little Cocoa, made with a whole lot of love. These hand-crafted treats are made and found in Southport by Alicia Chapman, who discovered a bean-to-bar chocolate shop while living in Berlin as a pastry chef. The chocolates were so incredible; Alicia couldn’t wait to offer high quality chocolates and more to the Gold Coast. Choose from gorgeous gift boxes filled with pralines, Tahini and black sesame chocolate bars, cranberry and ruby bites and much more. All chocolates can have a custom foil emblem added to them so you can add a logo, initials or a message too. This personalised touch can make a perfect Christmas present for any occasion.

The Fudge Shop Springbrook

Secret Santa at work got you stumped? A decadent slice from Springbrook’s Fudge Shop is sure to sweeten the exchange. Located on the cusp of heritage-listed Springbrook National Park, the quaint fudge shop is an institution amongst locals. A family-run business, the Fudge Shop makes their fudge daily and has every flavour from Red Velvet and Chilli Chocolate to classics like Caramel Cream and Rocky Road. The store also stocks a range of rainforest inspired goodies such as handmade soaps, locally sourced honey and Lemon Myrtle products.

Belgian Delights

A staple of Christmas gifting, chocolate is the classic gift for when you’re not sure what to get. From boxes of decadent truffles to individually wrapped couverture treats, the Verstreken family have passed down their craft through three generations to ensure their Belgian chocolates are authentic and of high quality.

Balter Brewery

Got a buddy that loves a cold one? Book them in for a brewery tour at local haunt Balter Brewery – even the fussiest of craft beer connoisseurs are sure to appreciate the in-depth brewery tour and complimentary tasting paddle. Psst – you might even catch a quick peek of owners/surfing legends Mick Fanning, Bede Durbidge and Joel Parkinson while you’re there!

The Art Lover

Art may be subjective but you’ll be sure to find something unique and bespoke at one of these local galleries and studios:

Dust Temple

Not only does Dust Temple host a range of artists, poets and musicians, the studio space is also home to house artists, a ceramicist, a leatherworker and silversmith along with a boutique foundry. Part gallery, part boutique shop and part café, this magical spot in Currumbin will be an experience in its own right.

Sean Scott Photography

Sean Scott certainly needs no introduction as one of Australia’s most well-known photographers. While many are familiar with his work, people are often surprised to find out that his flagship gallery lies in James Street in Burleigh. Pop in and have a browse – we’re confident your giftee will be thrilled to receive a print as a gift.

Whether it’s a splash of theatre, a sprinkle of performance art, live music or simply a feature film, there is something for everyone at HOTA. Keep them entertained and buy them a double pass or a gift voucher for future use.

Beauty Buff

Clean Beauty Market

Even the most diehard beauty junkies will be in awe of Clean Beauty Market’s offering. A first for the Gold Coast, this Mermaid Beach beauty shop specialises in ‘clean’ beauty and offers the best brands in non-toxic, ethical and effective make-up, skincare, hair and wellness products from around the world.

Cedar & Stone skincare

If you’ve got a girlfriend that lives by the mantra cleanse, tone, moisturise and repeat, this one might be for her. Cedar & Stone is a 100% vegan plant-based skincare brand sure to impress even the most cynical of skincare purists. Delivering high quality products while minimising the use of harsh chemicals on your skin and the environment, Cedar & Stone’s ethos is the hope natural skincare will one day become the norm – not just the alternative. This botanical brand caters for all genders, ages and skin types, ensuring every skin can enjoy some organic lovin’.

The Fitness Fanatic

So they pump iron, track their macros and live in lycra – they’ll probably be stoked with some health and wellness supplies from Burleigh’s very own Body Science. Stocking everything from protein powders to fitness apparel, you’ll be sure to find something here to pop under the Christmas tree for the gym bunny in your life.
