Gold Coast Summer of Music – The Ultimate Gig Guide

Kate Veling | December 2020

It’s been a tough year for lovers of live music. While they’ve been hit hard by the consequences of COVID-19, the people, performers, fans and venues who make up our local music scene have been innovative in adapting to accommodate ever-shifting restrictions with seated, socially distanced and online shows.

But restrictions are easing and the forecast is looking good for a summer of amazing live music ahead. Get your dancing shoes ready.. here are some of the highlights we have to look forward to!

Feedback Festival: 3 – 13 December

One city, 10 days, 10 venues and over 100 hours of live music by more than 50 bands. Quite literally, music to our ears! By the Gold Coast, for the Gold Coast, Feedback Festival is her to reignite the city’s thriving music scene. The initiative of the city’s Music Advisory Group (MAG) it’s about bringing our audiences, venues and musicians together.

The lineup boasts the cream of Gold Coast’s live music crop, playing at venues around the city including Miami Marketta, Mo’s Desert Club House, Vinnies Dive Bar, The SoundLounge and Southport RSL.

12 Days of Christmas @ HOTA: 3 – 20 Dec

Support by Feedback Festival, this diverse line up of musicians celebrates Queensland talent with 12 very different versions of the 12 Days of Christmas. Mark the start of the festive season with Christmas cocktails, good company and free live music. It’s the perfect chance to wind down in the afternoons, catch up with friends and perhaps gift your true love with something special (a partridge in a palm tree anyone?).

Featured performers include CC the Cat, Karl S Williams, Bobby Alu & Lily Pappas, Nadia Sunde, Benny D Williams, Dennis & Santa Taranta.

The Chats @ Vinnie Dive Bar: 8 December

The Chats represent everything that’s good about Australia and nothing that’s bad: a rebel spirit, gallows humour and the endless hedonistic pursuit of A Bloody Good Time. Drawing influence from the same fertile Australian pub rock scene that spawned everyone from AC/DC and The Saints to Cosmic Psychos, and sharing a similar singular self-contained approach to their art as such latter-day Aussie rock heroes as King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, The Chats describe themselves as “dropkick drongos from the Sunshine Coast of Australia”. These drongos play epic punk rock though – Dave Grohl, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) are all fans who showed up to their LA shows in 2019.
