Race Ready Supercar Teams Stay and Play on the Gold Coast

Supercar teams staying on the Gold Coast are loving what the City has to offer. Five Victorian teams and one NSW team, consisting of 90 people, are currently based here, ahead of the next race events on their calendar. Locally based Shell V-Power Racing remains in its usual workshop.

Supercar driver Anton De Pasquale from Penrite Racing sees the Gold Coast as his second home and spends a lot of time here.

“The Team is camped out at Norwell Motorplex, training, driving and having fun,” says De Pasquale, who is staying near Broadbeach.

“The Gold Coast, this time of year, it’s the place to be. It’s great to get out for a run around Emerald Lakes and we have our own private gym. Before Covid I’d been going to the World Gyms and they’re really good.”

“Unfortunately when I came up I didn’t have enough time or space to bring my bike, but when I come back here after Darwin I’ll get my bike up here and ride along the water, beachside all the way to Coolangatta. In summer we’ll get the boat out and go down the Nerang River wakeboarding and go out to Wavebreak Island,” says De Pasquale.

“The Goldie’s really stepped it up in terms of food, recently, too. There’s a few restaurants we go to close where we’re staying. Coming from Melbourne, food culture is what we do and what we’re known for. But on the Gold Coast, lately, all the food has been really good.”

Seaworld is currently home to Tickford Racing, who came away triumphant from Sydney with Jack Le Brocq’s maiden win. Le Brocq drives the Supercheap Auto Ford Mustang. He said he’s been enjoying the outdoors and warm weather.

“I’ve been getting plenty of exercise up here. It’s been good to get out and enjoy the good weather, even though we had a few days of rain early on, but it’s been beautiful lately,” says Le Brocq.

“It’s a good chance to get out and enjoy some sunshine because we don’t have much of that in Melbourne winters. Other than that I’ve just been hanging with the team. We took part in the Thunder Lake Stunt Show at Sea World last week, that was a bit of fun, and yeah, just taking in a good dose of sunshine.”

“It’s been quite different to what I’m used to, but at least we can get out and go running,” says Le Brocq. “There’s a good group of guys who are keen to keep the fitness up while we’re here.”

“We were lucky enough that Sea World’s given us access to their gym in the mornings, which has been handy and gives us a chance to throw some weights around and feel like Arni (Schwarzenegger),” jokes Le Brocq.

Team members were offered discounted admission to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Sky Point and Sky Point Climb and Warner Village Theme Parks, as well as the Australian Outback Spectacular, Top Golf, Sea World Resort and Paradise Country Farmstay.

They’ve also been offered gym memberships at the Gold Coast Performance Centre in Runaway Bay, with access to the gym, pool, track and field and ice baths.

The Tickford team includes four drivers and about 20 other team members including mechanics, engineers, PRs and team principals.

“Between them they ensure all four Tickford Ford Mustangs are prepared for every race of the Virgin Australian Supercars Championship,” says a Supercar spokesperson.

The team says they’re grateful to have the support of Village Roadshow Theme Parks, especially the staff at Sea World Resort who have taken great care of the squad during their stay.

The next events on the Supercars racing calendar are the BetEasy Darwin Triple Crown on 8th and 9th August and the Darwin SuperSprint on 15th and 16th August.
